The terminology Li-Fi was used for the first time during its inception by Harald Haas – a professor at the Edinburgh University who set up and steered the world class research on electronic data transmission on LED.

According to the pioneer inventors of Li-Fi technology, it boasts a rapid speed capacity of up to a hundred (100) times faster compared to the current Wireless Fidelity.


Traditionally, basing the fact on similarity, both Wi-Fi and Li-Fi are the same the fact being that the data transmission is done electromagnetically.

However, the Wi-Fi routers are founded on radio signals on the other hand, huge amount of internet data is transferable to and from on Li-Fi by using the light LED emissions.

In Li-Fi technology, the receipt and transmission of signals of light depends on LED controlled gargets. Li-Fi technology does not work in the dark. And there is a specific threshold from the receiver beyond which Li-Fi does not work. However, Li-Fi can still perform in dim lit rooms where light illumination percentages is between 10 and 90. The normal minimum standards of lighting level when reading is approximately 400 lux but in the case of dimly lit rooms, Li-Fi is able to provide communication from as low as 60 lux.

Where lighting problem persist other different data Transmission Avenue can easily be exploited. In the case of infra-red which is a success today, this can be used to detect the invisible light spectrum.

The uniqueness of this technology is that, Li-Fi does not depend on line of sight instead it is highly dependent on the strength and quality of the signal. The quality of signal transmitted can be defined by desired ratio as a proportion of both noise experienced and data interference.



The component of Li-Fi security should be one of the most secure systems given the fact that Li-Fi wireless technology is dependent on LED.
